In Memory of My Beloved Dad

Not a day passes by without thinking of my dad including this final day of year 2017. My tears would ooze like broken pipe whenever saw his photos over the social media as well as the Photobook I had made for him. It's often heart-wrenching to reminisce about the moments that my dad suffered the pain due to pancreatic cancer. He was used to be so strong and energetic until the long week that he had non-stop coughs accompanying with unbearable abdomen pain. It was 16th June that he had gone to have abdomen ultrasound with an request for CT scan on the next day. When the doctor announced on the bad news that the cancer was metastatic and could easily take up one's toll within 6 months, we were merely able to withhold our tears while my dad remained his calmness. I believed that his heart was turning upside down when received the news, but he still fetched us for lunch and even consoling us that it wasn't the worst case yet.

We decided to get for second opinion from another hospital and the doctor had patiently explaining on the condition with chemotherapy as the only option. However, a biopsy was suggested to be carried out to confirm the tumor condition. The weekend was terrible as we had to continue our celebration of Father's Day, knowing that it could be the last celebration. Dad had the very scrumptious Japanese meal with his favorite eel fish on Father's Day and mom had been willingly to try her very first Japanese dish too. I still remembered the walk we had along the park and I wished that I had been holding his hands tightly on that night.

After diagnosis and biopsy, chemotherapy sessions were scheduled in July. My dad was a brave warrior whom had faith in the upcoming battles and persevered in jogging every day before the chemotherapy schedules. After Raya holidays, the chemotherapy [Gemcitabine and Cisplatin] was undergone. Side effect i.e. high fever at night with high white blood cells happened after a week that he had his first chemotherapy. The hospitalization period began with my dad's appetite deteriorated after weeks of chemotherapy. It was traumatic when faced several patients surrounding the oncology unit leaving one by one too.The next side effect was skin infection at legs and he had drainage tube to reduce accumulated water in the stomach. It was so devastating to see the pain of your loved one and I never think that it would happen to me at this age. The birthday celebration of my dad this year was the most heart-shattering in which he hugged all of us one by one and told us how much he loved us with his hope for the family.

Due to the tumor market showed increment, he had changed chemotherapy [Abraxane] after a month. It seemed that cancers were under control with tolerable side effects such as weight loss, loss of appetite and terrible oral ulcers. However, those were the signage whereby my dad’s days were numbered unexpectedly in which he became so thin and had fatigue. The nights that spent in hospital accompanying him was unforgettable, the cold surrounding was the sore companion with the sadness accumulated in my heart. He lost the battle on 10th October without the chance of saying goodbye. The date was so perfect that I did not expect it was the last day he lived. The phlegm built up at his throat and he had difficulty to breathe with foods indigestible that evening. I was mourned with pain at the thought that he would be hoping each of us standing by with him even at the last moment. That phone call message was so hardly forgotten. It was like reminding you that with his absence, you had also lost the moment to call "daddy"/ "dad". He was a brave father, willingly to battle in order to see siblings’ graduation. The words of the cancer specialist who treated my dad was repeatedly read every night:

Your father was a brave soul, withstanding the insult of the terrible sickness with such composure and dignity. The disease was very advanced, but he put up a good fight. Please send my regards to your mother. My condolences.

Until now, the daily tasks would somehow trigger remembering of my dear dad fetching me to study, work and several ingrown nails operation. Other splendid moments like waiting at market for mom to finish her bargain of price for vegetables, grocery shopping, our daily dinner, evening chats over the workplaces or politics, piled rantings over the work, drying clothes, etc.  All these good moments were bursting away like soap bubbles. I appreciated that I had the chance to help him for cutting nails with the trust he had in me for carefully trimming his nails. The smile and satisfaction will be etched in my mind. I hope that my beloved dad is resting in peace at painless world now. I miss him so much!

An important life lesson I’ve learned is to value every day. You never know what’s going to happen. You’re not guaranteed another day, so live each day like it’s your last and try your best to keep a positive outlook.

Reunion dinner of the Year of Roaster at Fong Lye Taiwanese Restaurant (蓬莱茶房台湾料理)

Chinese New Year is slightly more than a month away but reservations for reunion dinners were filling up fast and most restaurants were fully booked. In line with the festive season, we had chosen to have dinner on the 2nd day of Chinese New Year at Fong Lye Taiwanese Restaurant. Reunions Sets were offered from RM388++ onwards depending on number of pax.

It was the 2nd time we dined here , the service wasn't pleasant as the waiters were not attentive even though the restaurant was not fully occupied. The desserts were served after 30 minutes of waiting time. Food were with good quality yet the price of reunion dinner set is at high edge. We opted for RM588++ set and the final bill was around RM800. Based on the food menu of restaurant, each food was priced approximately 20% increment compared to foods' price during non-festive season. To save on feast of Chinese New Year period, I think fast foods, western foods, Korean/ Japanese foods might be cheaper and more budget-saving compared to Chinese restaurants.

Taiwanese cuisines @ Fong Lye Taiwanese Restaurant (蓬莱茶房台湾料理); Desa Sri Hartamas

Fong Lye is a chain of restaurants which serves Taiwanese cuisines and most people has compliments for the signature dish i.e. three cups chicken. The first visit of mine was at Mid Valley branch three years ago. Upon the celebration of my dad's birthday, we chose to treat him a hearty chinese-style meal in Fong Lye Taiwanese Restaurant. We went there around 8pm and the restaurant was very crowded and luckily no queue was seen lining outside.

We were lucky to be seated as the seats were fully occupied after then. After glancing through the menu, we had ordered the following dishes which were shown below. The Pu-Er tea were served while we waiting for our food to be served.

Yam chunks with minced meats
The yam chunks were stir-fried together with minced pork meats, small prawns and dried shrimps. Flavor and aroma were inextricably linked together for this firstly served dish, making our stomachs growling louder. Well, as usual, cameras "taste" the food first.

Claypot Eggplant with Minced Meat
Another homely dish which tasted similar to the one cooked by my mom. So, that's nothing much special about this dish, and I would prefer it to be in Sichuan style with some spiciness. Anyway, it's still a succulent dish and surprisingly the dish was not oily.
As green dragon vegetables were not available, the waitress had introduced another similar vegetables to be stir-fried with sliced chickens. It's simple yet delicious. We thought the tastiness was due to MSG, but we weren't thirsty after eating the dishes.

Bean curd in Claypot with Abalone Clams
A simple dish comprised of Japanese bean curds, shiitake mushrooms, abalone clams, fish maw, sliced carrots and sweet peas. The gravy was plain and rather plain, yet good to be matched with rice.

3 Variety Supreme Chicken/ Three-cup chicken

The last food served in a bobbling pot was the popular three-cup chicken. After the waiter stirred the chicken with fresh basil leaves, then we started our feast.

The dish derived its name from three cups of sauces that required to cook this dish including a cup of rice wine, a cup of sesame oil and a cup of soy sauce.Fresh basil leaves, chilies and garlic were added to this Taiwanese culinary triumvirate, contributing an irresistible combination. The chicken meats were tender and flavorful, accompanied with fragrance induced by basil leaves. It's a mouth-watering dish and I had lost my counts on how many chickens I had eaten.

It was a pleasant dining experience and I missed the three-cups chicken.

Busy schedules of both parents and children make it harder to have family dinner nowadays, it has become a precious moment whenever we gather to have a meal home together and celebrate each family member's birthday. There're certainly few things that currency has no value, especially the time spent with family.Well, spend more time with the priceless loved ones!

Happy Birthday, dad!

Dwaeji Galbi,Pajeon, Kimchi Soup, Korean style fried chicken@Gangnam 88; Solaris Mont Kiara

With the uprising of Korean culture in Malaysia, Korean restaurants and cafes are sprouting everywhere especially in KL city. However, it's very difficult to convince my mom to try Korean cuisines as her choice of foods is only around Chinese style.

Upon the celebration of Father's Day after the consecutive examination weeks of siblings, dad had provided the menus for mom to choose over with the persuasion that he'll foot the bill. Gangnam 88 was the choice for us to taste Korean cuisines.Ever since South Korean musician Psy’s Gangnam Style had gone viral on YouTube, the word "Gangnam" had been a popular word in most people’s dictionary including my mom, this was one of the reason why Gangnam 88 was chosen to be dined at. Secondly, we wanted to dine at a restaurant which served wide range of Korean cuisines such as bibimbap, BBQ foods, kimchi soup and etc.  It's located strategically at the 1st floor above Coffee Bean at Solaris Mont Kiara.

Considering the crowds and waiting time, we went to Gangnam 88 around 6pm. We were greeted warmly when we stepped into Gangnam 88. At Gangnam 88, you'll be seeing LED TV playing the latest K-Pop musics from famous idols like G-Dragon, Girls’ Generation, Super Juniors and etc., accompanied with the posters of K-Pop stars are placed all over and the cabinets fill with Korean stars merchandises.

I guess the man who is wearing blue shirt is the owner of this shop.

Menus were provided as soon as we were seated. The man who wore a blue shirt was suspected as the shop owner as he's not wearing the uniform as the rest of waiters/ waitresses. He helped in explaining the foods after seeing us flipped through the menus for several times, Eventually we opted for family set which consisted of pajeon (pancake), kimchi soup, seafood jeongol, BBQ pork galbi (Dwaeji-galbi ), sweet and sour fried chicken. While we ordered soju, he had a short chat with us. A joke that I merely remembered was we asked for whereabouts of Song Joong Ki when he asked what else he could help. He pretended to call him and said that Song Joong Ki would be arrive within minutes. Well, a lively and funny chat though.

Soju for us to cheer!

Seafood Jeongol
Similar like what we saw from other tables, the soups were served to boil till piping hot on the portable stove. Spicy and tangy soup was really comforting and satisfying as a starting meal. The cabbages, sliced pork bellies, ramyoon, mushrooms, dumplings were the ingredients,

Webfood octopus pancake
Seafood pancake was the staple snack that we had while we waited for the rest of Korean foods to be served. The seafood pancake was packed with a generous amount of ingredients, we shall try its kimchi pancake during next visit.

 Kimchi Soup
The signature Korean dish which was served with the delectable ban chan (side dishes) came next. The side dishes included bean curds, eggs, fried anchovies and nuts; kimchi, potatoes and seaweeds. The fermented kimchi vegetables provided deep flavor to the broth and it tasted appetizing when ate together with sliced pork meats and bean curds. Kimchi soup here was not too sour and spicy, warming our stomachs after consuming the pork and chicken.

Sweet and sour chicken
The deep-fried crispy chicken meats were glazed in a sticky, sweet, and spicy sauce. My mom and I loved this dish very much and we had eaten so many bite-sized boneless chicken pieces.

Dwaeji-galbi – RM49 (large portion)
Their tasty savory sauce’s recipe is from South Korea’s Jeju Island restaurant for more than 30 years as mentioned. The sizzling BBQ pork ribs were marinated well and very flavorful. We tried having the bite-sized meat wrapped with leafy vegetables as shown in Korean dramas.

The photo was taken right after all foods were served.

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience to dine a wide range of delicious Korean cuisines. A Korean restaurant that offers a splendid variety of foods, worth for the price paid.

1977 New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice; Mid Valley Megamall

1977 New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice has an outlet opened at the upper floor of Mid Valley Megamall conveniently to be dined by shoppers who crave for chicken rice or Chinese cuisines. The family led by the late Mr. Yan Khoon Yin operated a shop selling mainly steamed chicken served with bean sprouts and Hor Fun noodles in Ipoh, Perak. Their first "1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice" restaurant opened at Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya in year 1977 and currently their business has extended with branches at Jalan Gasing, Sri Petaling, Damansara Jaya, Sunway Pyramid shopping mall and Mid Valley Megamall.

Due to Mother's Day celebration, most restaurants were fully booked introducing the set meals which we were reluctant to dine-in. We randomly picked one of the restaurant in Mid Valley Megamall  and 1977 New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice; Mid Valley Megamall happened to be our choice of dining spot. There were two-storey, hence you could opt to dine at upper floor which was more comfortable and spacious. The signature meals of 1977 New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice i.e. Organic Kampung Chicken dish and roasted pork had been sold out. With the recommendation of the waiter, we opted the following dishes:

Roasted Fortune ChickenGreatly appreciated the bones-removing service, we managed to eat the roasted chicken conveniently. The chicken meat were tender and flavorful. The chili sauce wasn't the best one to match with chicken rice but still acceptable.

Bean Sprouts @ RM15
At its price, I could say we had eaten premium bean spouts.
Anyway, the bean sprouts were crunchy and nicely seasoned by the salted fish.

Buttermilk fish fillets
The buttermilk fish fillets were coated with salted egg butter milk and topped with curry leaves, becoming my most favorite dish of this restaurant.

Pork Meatballs @RM2/ each
The meatballs were made of pork and minced dried cuttlefish, quite expensive to be charged at RM2 for one meatball although it looked packed with meat. It's bouncy at each bite anyway.
The soup was flavorful but I could tell it's full of seasoning.

Super Hokkien Mee, Nyonya Kuih Muih and Yam Cake @ 和喜茶室 One Corner Cafe; Jalan Bawasah in Penang

If you love to eat prawns, prawn noodles or hokkien mee is definitely a must-try hawker delicacy when you visit Penang. Southern states used to call it as prawn noodles due to the aromatic soup which is made by boiling prawn shells and prawn heads together for hours. During the recent visit to Penang for Qing Ming, we chose to have our breakfast at One Corner Cafe which located at Jalan Bawasah which was directly behind the iconic Penang Plaza.

It’s rather amusing to watch the locals in their haste to score a bowl of Hokkien mee at the stall in One Corner Café. According to my aunt, a bowl of this full-bodied soup stock with a strong aroma of prawns could have up to an hour waiting time. When we placed order to the stall at 7.30am, the hawker had informed that our 6 bowls of hokkien mee will be served within 40-60 minutes.

Apart from the famed hokkien mee, there were a wide selection of Penang delicacies such as Lor Mee, Penang curry noodles, chee cheung fun, yam cake, economic noodles, kueh teow t'ng, bean sprout chicken rice, wantan noodles and etcetera.

Take a peep on the amount of take-away orders of Supper Hokkien Mee.
This is one of the reason why this place came alive with hustle and bustle.
The seller was busy taking and packing orders; you may easily being told to leave if you cannot tolerate with the long waiting time.

Kuih kosui

Various Nyonya kuih muih

Kuih talam
This pandan and coconut layered cakes or better known as Kuih Talam was a common Nyonya Kuih. However, I found that only Penang's Kuih Talam has a much springy texture of the green layer and fragrant coconut layer.

Kuih kosui (Pandan and dark palm sugar flavor).
It's sweet, soft and chewy topped with lightly salted fresh of coconut.
Penang local coffee was the nice match with Nyonya Kuih.
Pulut tai tai complemented with kaya, kuih talam, kuih bingka ubi
(taken back to home as our tea-time snacks)
The yam cake, or more affectionately known to locals as or kueh was ordered to fill the emptiness of our stomachs while waiting for hokkien mee. The texture of the steamed yam cake is very soft, made of yam cubes. The yam cake was topped with generous amount of deep fried shrimps, shallots, white sesame, chili slices and scallions, providing a boost of flavor and fragrance while eating.

The famous hokkien mee was finally served after 40 minutes waiting time. Super Hokkien Mee's hokkien mee was much spicier and you could request the seller not to place extra spoonful chili paste. Slurping down a strong prawn taste of the soup was great! Pork ribs and fresh prawns were used as the base after the prawn shells had been boiled for a few hours giving it a rich, meaty flavor. The hokkien mee was garnished with crispy fried onions, shallots, lean pork slices and 5-6 prawns. The steaming bowl of hokkien mee had me left with satisfying stomachs.
