Restoran Ah Theme 亚添家乡饭店 @ Bandar Menjalara

Restoran Ah Theme 亚添家乡饭店 had become our recent hot spot for family dinner after we moved to the new territory. The foods here are delicious with reasonable price which has been one of the reasons that the restaurant is often fully occupied during dinner hour.

We love the specialty Assam Fish! As shown in the photo below, steamed fish was topped with peppermint leaves, Assam broth which cooked with tomatoes, lady fingers, pineapples slices and tomatoes. The fish is always fresh! This sour spicy broth was heavenly tasted by mixing with rice.

Assam Fish

Stir-Fried Green Dragon Vegetables with Shimeji Mushrooms (松菇青龙菜)

Ever since we knew about this vegetable, we used to order this dish in restaurant. It's well cooked! We experienced each bite of crunchiness of these green dragon vegetables.

Signature bean curd which are braised with meats, prawns, pork lards, carrots and etc.
The bean curds are soft with crispy skin, simple dish yet delicious!

Lemon  Roasted Chicken

The crispy chicken was very flavorsome and the light sour-sweetness did perfectly to compliment my bowl of white rice.

Overall, the food here was served with good quality and affordable prices. The female boss is friendly and often recommend dishes that are suitable for us. The drawbacks are medium portion of the dish and hard to find car park during peak hour.

Penang Street Foods Trip- Duck Meat Koay Teow Th'ng, Chee Cheong Fun,Indian mee goreng & Hokkien Mee

Penang; an island of food paradise in Asia. The large variation of Penang street foods have been lingered in my minds. Our aunts have always recommended us to try one of their favorites at a coffee shop called Kim Lee at Macalister Lane. My dad said that this stall has a long history where they have used to eat during childhood.

Despite old age, Uncle Ah Hai takes care of everything from ingredients reparation, cooking and serving customers.

The pork bones, chicken and duck meat had been used as the main ingredients of the soup. A bowl of smooth koay teow with topped with slices of chicken and duck meat, two fish balls and garnished garlic for enhancing the aroma.

The portion of the koay teow th'ng was medium and our stomach could fit in another plate of chee cheong fun (steamed rolled rice noodles) from Seow Fong Lye Cafe. The cheong fun here was unlike what the southerners routinely have. The Penang's chee cheong fun served with thick and pungent shrimp paste (he ko), a dollop of chili paste and sprinkled with roasted sesame seeds. The shrimp paste has a slightly spicy and sweet flavor while the texture of the rice noodles was smooth, making it an excellent base for the savory sauce.

Mummy's otak-otak was the another Penang street food you may try.
It has different taste compared to the Southern region's otak-otak.
You may read the review here.

Before leaving Macalister Lane to the next street food stalls, we took some photographs in front of the heritage buildings. The historic architectures and old colonial buildings were so nice and well-kept.

Indian mamak mee goreng/ noodles in Penang is very unique and really worth tasting. This stall, located in Seng Lee Café along Bangkok Lane. Unlike the other fried noodles, this Penang's version mamak mee goreng doesn't have prawns/fish balls.

The mee goreng possess all the flavors to tingle the taste buds i.e. sweet, sour and spicy. The spicy stewed cuttlefish, mashed sweet potatoes, fried tofu cubes, crispy fritters, bean sprouts, crunchy fried shallots and slices of cabbages are the main ingredients of the mee goreng, The tomato gravy furnished the noodles with sweetness while the chili paste contributes spiciness accompanied with a slice of lime adding a hint of sourness to this irresistible dish. The taste of the mee goreng was delicious. Each mouthful had a mixture of crunchy, chewy and softness feeling. AWW.. I miss this dish very much!

The last Penang street food that we had during this trip was Penang Hokkien Mee in Kedai Low Eng Hoo @ Lorong Selamat. The dish of yellow noodles mixed with vermicelli drenched in thick spicy broth made of prawns and pork, served with prawns, lean pork, boiled egg, a garnish of water spinach, bean sprouts and a sprinkle of fried shallots. Sadly, this dish was not up to our expectation as I could have better bowl of hokkien mee in KL.

Wong Chau Jun Restaurant (王昭君小食館) @ Jalan Rangoon; Georgetown

Penang itself is a good venue for exploring the large variety of famed street foods especially the char koay teow, hokkien lor mee, hokkien noodles (prawn-based soup noodles), white curry noodles, cendols and etcetera. Apart from having these Penang cuisines as lunch, Wong Chau Jun; a Chinese restaurant along Rangoon Road in George Town could be your choice for scrumptious meals. The restaurant itself was named after the legendary Wang Zhaojun who was one of the Four Beauties of ancient China.

The dishes at Wong Chau Jun are displayed on the walls of the restaurants; easing the food patrons to make orders.

As recommended by my sister, the must-try dishes are fish hor fun and the spicy and sour fish head vermicelli.  You could opt for deep fried dish meat or fish head.
As the name of the dish itself, the soup is slightly spicy yet it has a strong lemongrass taste and sour; appetizing! The fish head had too many bones, we shall order fish meats next time.
Steamed Fish Hor Fun is rather new for us. Soft, fresh fish meat and smooth hor fun is a good match; both are tasted delicious by mixing them with the soy sauce.

The other dishes we had ordered were home-made deep fried beancurd with dried shrimps and marmite fried chicken.

Foong Wei Heong Restaurant 风味小食馆 @ Georgetown

The often choice of Chinese restaurant to have scrumptious dinner yet with reasonable price in Penang Island is Foong Wei Heong Restaurant. This restaurant is highly recommended by my aunts; Penangites who often patronized this restaurant for the good quality of dishes. It is advisable to book your table before going to the restaurant as the restaurant is often crowded during dinner hour.

We reached there at 6.30pm and it was crowded as expected.Coming from KL where we have numerous excellent Cantonese cuisines, I must say that our family were very happy with our dinner tonight.

The 5 main dishes we had ordered were:
  1. Spring rolls and prawn rolls
  2. Stir-fried lotus root mixed with celery and ginko
  3. Signature beancurd stir-fried with gourds and chunks of crab meats
  4. Fried yam basket with signature BBQ pork ribs
  5. Steamed cod fish

Spring rolls and prawn rolls
Both spring rolls and prawn rolls were crispy.
I preferred the prawn rolls in which two big, fresh prawns were spotted when I took a bite on it.
The spring rolls' fillings
Stir fried lotus roots had became one of the favourite dishes for us.
Normally lotus roots were stir fried with dried shrimps but Foong Wei Heong Restaurant  had stir-fried lotus roots with ginko and celery; a perfect match. Crunchy at each bite.
Signature beancurd which had cooked in different way.
My aunt thought of ordering deep fried beancurds. Anyway, I liked the broth very much for its tasty crab meat slices.
The yam basket was filled with large portion of BBQ pork ribs.
Thumbs up!
The steamed cod fish which was my aunts' favorites!

Foong Wei Heong Restaurant 风味小食馆 is highly recommended for its delicious dishes with satisfying portion and reasonable prices. I shall revisit when I return to Penang again :)

Herbal Duck Thigh Noodles @ Bidor

When talk about the famous foods at Bidor, most will recommend Pun Chun Restaurant that serves its famous duck thigh noodles. The restaurant is usually packed with crowds and sometimes you may need to wait for more than 30 minutes for seat or foods to be served.

Pun Chun Chicken Biscuits & Restaurant
Address: 38 & 40, Jalan Besar, 35500 Bidor, Perak.

When we drove back to Penang this Saturday, we had decided to drop by Bidor for breakfast. We did not choose to dine at Pun Chun Restaurant; yet dining at a nearby restaurant which also serves duck thigh noodles. Similar to Pun Chun restaurant, Restoran Sin Thean Thean was easily spotted because this corner lot located near Pun Chun restaurant, which was only about 5-10 minutes’ driving journey from Bidor Toll exit.

The signboard of 驰名源珍鸭腿面 could be seen when we stepped into the restaurant. My siblings and I had ordered duck thigh noodles while parents ordered wanton noodles.

A closer look on the noodles.
Tender duck thigh meat, wolf-berries, and springy noodles.

Surprisingly, the duck thigh noodles in a larger portion was served within 5 minutes. The herbal broth was very fragrant and rich with ingredients such as dried longan, wolf berries and of course the bigger duck thigh. The tender duck thigh meat was flavorful with a strong herb taste.I opine that the duck thigh noodles here was more scrumptious than the one I ate at Pun Chun Restaurant.

Well, the short waiting time and good taste of duck thigh noodles will make me returning to visit this stall again in future!

The wanton noodles was not as good as the duck thigh noodles. According to my mom, the noodles were springy, yet the overall taste was not flavorful. She strongly regretted for ordering this plate of wanton noodles.

There were several brands of biscuits available here including Pin Chun's famous Crispy Kampar Chicken Biscuits and caramelized egg fritters.
